Save me from myself

I'm trying to convince myself that dying my hair platinum and cutting it short like Mia Michaels' (one of the choreographers on So you think you can dance. I have a mad crush on her.) has right now is a bad idea. BAAAAD idea. (I'd show you a picture, but all the pics I see of her online are her old hair, which is not at all what I am wanting.)
Somebody please stop me.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with another blogger last night for dinner. I won't say who since I didn't ask if I could name drop (you are all celebrities in my mind), but it was quite exciting. It is a little weird meeting somebody in person, especially since I end up blabbering nervously about stupid things, but she didn't run away screaming at least. She was very cool. And nice.
I'm always a little shocked to find that bloggers are real live people. It's kind of wild that you all don't just exist inside my computer.
(Edit: I can name drop! It's Mel from Indyness! She is super cool and you should all be jealous that I got to meet her.)

Now if I could just somehow get you all together and we could have a mad party and hang out.

Anyone know anything about buying individual health insurance? COBRA is apparently costing $1200 a month, so I am thinking about buying my own high deductible insurance in case I get hit by a car or something. I really never need to go to the doctor and I don't take any medicine, so it seems mad that to pay so much for something I don't really use. For anything small I can go to the doctor I used to work for. Is this a stupid idea?

EDIT: I think my brain was in a rut this morning. I used "mad" in each section. How mad of me.

  1. OMG! I was just thinking last night about how much of a girl crush I have on Mia Michaels! She is so hot and talented and I LOVE her! And she loves all the same dancers that I do, which clearly indicates that they should hire me for the next season of SYTYCD as a judge because I have an eye for talent, just like Ms. Michaels. I wish I could tell you to stop, but the thing is, she's HOT, and I actually think that this style of hair would look awesome on you. I mean, if you are brave enough to pull it off, then GO FOR IT.

Please have a mad party for all of us bloggers. I do sometimes have to step back and remind myself that these women (and men) are real people just like me, and as such, have flaws and weaknesses, and strengths and coolness, just like my IRL friends do. And I love meeting people in real life, and I need an excuse to do that. So get working on that!

I wish I knew more about health insurance, but alas, the one and only benefit to working for the state is that I don't have to pay for health care. It's crappy but free...

  2. LOL! It's like when one of my 8 year old students bumps into me in public, and looks at me all bewildered! Like I don't actually LIVE at school!?! It's so funny!

I went without health insurance for a while, but could not do that now. Although we might have to rob banks periodically to afford the $1200 a month!

  3. I think that getting health insurance for emergencies is a great idea. I sell it and I am always encouraging people to self insure for what they can due to the high cost. If you insure for Dr. visits you always end up paying more a month then you would ever pay if you paid for those visits yourself. You basically want to have something to get you in the door at the hospital. Think of the most you could afford if something happened and pick that as your deductable. Hope that helps :).

Oh and yes we could all get together and party like rock stars

  4. I'm so there for the blog friend party - can we make it somewhere fun and exciting like NYC or Vegas? My mom has connections at Mandalay Bay and can probably get us all rooms at a really great rate.

Regarding health insurance, it's usually less expensive to go through a broker instead of paying COBRA. COBRA is the flat premium rate the employer has negotiated + a 2% admin fee imposed by the employer. I've done lots of Benefits work in my HR life. When Duane was in transition from one job to another we called a broker and they were able to help us get Blue Cross and it was actually quite reasonable.

  5. I forgot to comment on the hair. The only platinum I can picture is on fantastic 4. You know the storm girl? Anyway I think it would be smokin hot but I have no balls so I could never do this.

  6. I was just thinking yesterday about all the bloggers I'd like to meet IRL and how we should have a big massive blogger party. LETS DO IT!

Oh and I'm behind on my SYTYCD but I looooooove Ms Michaels as well!

  7. Oh, dude. If you do that to your hair, you will be even more of a godess in my eyes. I've always wanted to have super short blond hair, but never have. And now that I'm trying to get knocked up, I've stopped colouring my hair. I think it would look so good on you, and it would also make you look so badass for the VMB. Word.

And I'm still working on my name, which is why I haven't joined up yet, but I think I've finally picked one, and will get a photo together soon.

And you are the first to know - I triggered this morning at 9 am!

  8. I don't mind if you name drop. :) I enjoyed meeting you to. I can't believe such a cool blogger lives so close to me. The last time I met a fellow IF blogger in person I had to travel to NYC to do it.

Have you checked with Anthem yet? I think Vanessa checked into catastrophic med insurance with them once, and it was around $300 per month. Still pricey but better than nothing.

  9. I wrote a big long comment and it got eaten :-( In summary...

I work for a super small company so I have an individual health insurance plan as does hubby. Make sure you are aware of what is and is not covered. I had to sign up for independant maternity coverage. Hope I get to use it! If you aren't signed up before you get knocked up they won't cover a penny. If you start TTC again you will want to know what your coverage is like.

I am going back to school in August and will be covered under a policy at the University, even with only 6 credit hours per semester. Husband will be covered too. Insurance for both of us, plus tuition, and we will still be spending less then we are now, so that's something else to look in to.

  10. I love Mia's new hair. I was watching last night and actually stopped to think, "Her new hairstyle is smokin'." So you'll get no discouragement from me, especially since if you get your hair whacked, fried, dyed, and laid to the side, I won't be the one who'll have to live with it. :)

  12. I don't think the insurance idea is stupid - COBRA is stupid expensive. Usually when I change jobs or something I just let my insurance lapse. Your idea is much better than that! ;)

  13. I just happen to work for a broker who can hook you up with individual coverage. Go to McGohanBrabender.com. There should be a link for individual coverage and contact information. It would be better to work through a broker who knows all the ins and outs and what's covered and what's not. They are the experts. And the premium you pay is the same whether or not you use a broker. Oh, by the way, I am so jealous of all these bloggers getting to meet in person! That seems to be happening a lot lately.

  14. the hub pays for his own insurance which rocks (for the most part) & is roughly $300 a month. This is obviously a different part of the country- but I see no reason why you can't do it- just go to any insurer & they can give you prices on private insurance.

I watched that last night & I WISH I could be a platinum blond. I will however play devil's advocate & just say that if your hair is anything like mine- & I've seen pictures lady- I would be cautious. You will want to go to a professional & it gets pricy to be that blond. Especially when it's short hair because you need to cut & dye A LOT!

That said- I always wanted to be a platinum blonde- thinking more Gwen Stef.ani... but I just can't keep up with it- too much committment for me!

  15. I LOOOOVE Mia Michaels! Her new hair cut / color is amazing! I think it might look awesome with your eyes.

  16. BTW . . . I would look into Blue Cross or Kaiser. Good luck!

  17. I'm the dissenter here -- don't do it! I love your red hair!! And I think few people have the complexion to look really good that blonde. Not that I'm dissin gyours, just sayin' -- staick with the red, girl!!!!!

Don't know much about insurance, but I think a high-deductible policy for unexpected accidents, etc., is a great idea. And yeah, COBRA sucks, so crazy expensive. Too bad insurance shopping is so much less fun that shoe shopping!

  18. You know I say all of you come see the Pyramids and hang out with me! It would be sooooo fun!!!

I wish I got the lastest So You Think You Can Dance as I LOVEEEEEE Mia and want to see her new do! Are there any pics online of her hair yet? Will go look now, i say do it, even though I haven't seen it, knowing her, it is sure to be hot!!

  19. OH! I love meeting bloggers IRL. Too bad we don't live close to eachother. I think we could get up to some pretty entertaining shenanigans. Or MAD shenanigans as you would no doubt call them. ;)

  20. That is a very brave haircut!

  21. how awesome is Mia's hair? It makes her eyes twinkle!

VERY jealous of your celebrity blog meet up. I would love to have a big summer blogger party!

As for insurance. Talk to me. I am a "self employed" (ha ha ha- like taking care of grandmother pays!) and have individual coverage in a state that does not like single gals...

But I know who is lame and who is kind. I also recently spoke to teh people via that tv ad icanbenefit and they were pretty nice. (they also have optional maternity coverage that will kick in after a 3 month waiting period- that is CRAZY short)

But if you are just looking for regular person insurance I have been very pleased with Aetna. They worked with me with SO many places wouldn't because of my preexisting conditions (infertility, acne & depression)

  22. Well, hair grows out and you can always redye. I say give it a whirl. The worst thing that will happen is you'll hate it and have to come up with a plan B. Hair's one of life's more forgiving decisions.

Definitely get some hospital-type insurance. You just never know: I got bitten by a spider once, causing my finger to swell to ridiculous proportions. I ended up in the ER, and the whole stupid episode cost me 8 hours of my life (I had to walk home at 2 AM!) and about $5,000.

That COBRA cost is just outrageous. When are we going to fix this idiotic health care mess?!?!

  23. Isn't platinum hair fabulous? The only cause I have is to ask a stylist about it first. I had a friend years ago who wanted to go platinum, but a stylist told her that she was waaay too fair and that platinum would wash her out.

It would be soo awesome to have an annual IF blogger convention! I totally would be there. I'd love to meet me some Io. :-)

I agree that the insurance you buy on your own will be cheaper than Cobra, although the benefits won't be the same. I betcha Calli's got all the good info for ya there.

  24. It seems as though I agree with the majority... Mia Michaels is HOT! I love her hair. If you can pull it off, more power to ya! DO IT!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love Mia Michaels too! I think she's very cool! And yes, her hair-do is very very hot!

I hope to one day visit all my favourite bloggers as well. One day. Some day.
