Sounds romantic

Well, I've consulted with Dr. Annacyclopedia and she agrees - I clearly have consumption. I had the flu all last week and then some and I thought I was finally at the tail end but I just keep coughing. It's not a productive cough, but it's deep and persistent (never fear, I have already realized I need to get to a real doctor and make sure it's not consumption, romantic as it sounds).

It's probably partly my fault - I went to Nashville last weekend to visit friends and stayed up all night drinking and gossiping loudly. It was fun, but not really conducive to getting healthy. And at work we have a conference coming up on Monday and Tuesday. Our VP had a death in the family, so I have to handle his shit on top of mine. Also making me tired.

Next fall, somebody, anybody, please remember to remind me to get my damn flu shot. I have been sick far too much this winter.

So assuming the consumtion doesn't take me in the middle of the night, until I can get in to the doctor, does anyone have any suggestions for what works for them in terms of sinus pressure and chest congestion? I'm drinking lots and lots of water, took some Robitusin, sucking cough drops like they'll make us fertile, using a humidifier...

  1. You must try my "litte red hots" as my family has always called them. I believe they are actually Sudafed but get the good stuff behind the counter from the pharmacist. It's so funny you have to show ID to prove you are old enough. Just don't make crack from them and they will do wonders!

I hope you feel better soon. And I am sure having the fun didn't make it too much worse.

  2. I am sorry you cannot shake this easily. Mucinex is commonly used for chest congestion by many docs. My family and I swear by TheraFlu for head colds and sinus congestion. If I was really miserable, I went for the NyQuil at night. That stuff will make you not care.

I hope you feel better soon!

  3. I SWEAR by Mucinex. That stuff rocks. You know what I'm talking about? They have the gross commercials with the talking green phlegm?

I hope you feel better soon...

  4. I was a big fan of that nasty hot drinkable Theraflu stuff when I was in college. It tastes gross, but it always seemed to work.

  5. Borrow a nebulizer from someone. My neighbor loaned me one and it kicked my bronchitis to the curb.

Oh and glad you are back blogging. Hope you feel better soon.

  6. Someone stole my bronchitis diagnosis...I had it last spring and got some antibiotics. Feel better soon.

  7. Mucinex. Of course it's the same thing as plain Robitussin (Guaifenesin), but not as yucky.

I hope you feel better, soon!

  8. I second, or third the suggestion of mucinex. It's in a pill form and controlled release. Unless of course, you enjoy drinking Robitussin from the bottle. :) Add in the real sudafed too, and you have yourself a winning cocktail. I think Mucinex combines the two now too. Ask behind the counter. I hope you feel better soon!

  9. I know it is nasty but I swear by my neti pot. It is awesome and gets all of that gunk out of your sinuses so you can A.breathe and B.not have it draining into your chest.

Also, turn on the shower as hot as you can and sit in the bathroom with the door closed for as long as it will run hot. That usually helps to loosen me up a bit.

  10. The hub (who could take the good stuff!) got the day/night sudafed combo & he was better in about a third of the time I was. I could only take cough drops & robitussin. Probably could have taken something else buit the damn docs never gave me my handy packet of info...

I hope you are feeling better- & if it ~is~ consumption- don't forget to faint dramatically at random intervals throughout the day. Preferably in a long flowing gown.

  11. There are some terrible, non-flu bugs attacking us down south, so don't kick yourself too hard for going without that flu shot.

Feel better soon! I'm an idiot and usually just suffer through whatever's ailing me.

  12. Consumption does stink, but then you get to sing a duet with Ewan MacGregor and he writes a famous story about you after your die. So, it ain't all bad...

Have you tried a NetiPot to get rid of the congestion? It's weird, but it works (looks like a little teapot, you shove the spout up one nostril and the water + crappy congestion crap flows out the other nostril). See here.

  13. I'm a big fan of hot water, honey and lemon. It also doesn't hurt to add a little (or a lot) of bourbon or scotch to the mix.

Mucinex also rocks and doesn't make your head feel all ballooney like sudafed (the real stuff) can. I had a doc recommend when I was suffering through a series of sinus infections.

  14. Mucinex worked for a few weeks ago. It was the first time I had taken it and it looks like others swear by it! Hope you get better soon!

  15. I second Jendeis on the neti pot and Ms. Higrens on the hot toddy.

My idea is almost guaranteed not to be mentioned by anyone else, and while it sounds awful, it really works for me, and the discomfort doesn't last long. This was recommended to me by my naturopath when I kept being stricken down with consumption. Take a pair of cotton socks, wet them in cold water and wring them out. Put them on and then put a pair of thick, wooly socks overtop. Dress really warmly (like sweats) and go to bed. When you wake up in the morning your inner socks will be dry, and your circulation and your immune system will have been boosted, and anything on your lungs will be on its way out. You might need to do it several nights in a row if you find the congestion is really hanging on.

It sounds horrible, and it is, but only for 10 minutes. Then you'll be asleep and cozy in your extra warm jammies. Having downed a mug of hot water, lemon, honey and bourbon just before bed would probably help, too!

  16. Feel better soon! One of my friends just told me about the Neti Pot. It's looks and sounds really disturbing, but apparently it works. Google it and watch the video on how to do it...it's uhh interesting to say the least.

  17. I so wish i could send you some of this magic syrup that Cairo pharmacies sell here, and you know what...its cost the equivalent of approx. $.25 no f'en joke! I used to think we had the shizit back home over there, but this stuff WORKS! Why can't I send it, two reasons: 1.) Mail here incoming and outgoing no gurantees, sucks! 2.) I don't think they would let me send this syrup, even if i didn't disclose what it was, something tells me they would open it and probably drink it. Anyway sure hope you get rid of this soon and welcome back, i missed ya! (although i knew you were back cause you left me some luv, gee thanks- want some coffee? Check me out in the next few days and the coffee thing will make sense, promise.)

  19. My friend swears by the Zicam nose spray for congestion. And I swear that using "Cold-eeze" has actually helped me get over this crap faster.

  20. Ooh, goody! Now you can be all waifish and star in a musical that you write with your secret artist boyfriend while you tease the rich patron. Only maybe not so good because then you'd have to die at the end with gross blood trickling out the side of your mouth. But on the upside, you'll be practically canonized among your turn of the century French Bohemian friends. So yeah. Consumption has it's goods and bads.

As far as medicines go, me and some TheraFlu do things up right when I get sick. It kinda knocks your ass down, but you wake up feeling pretty damn good, and if not, you just take more and sleep a little longer.

Alternately, if you're feeling all hippy-dippy, tea with honey and lemon can be good, too.

    Feel better soon, dude.

  21. Shit, and I just saw that someone beat me to the Moulin Rouge reference. Crap. Slow to the punch today. I blame it on the booze.

  22. I hope you feel better soon. I'm a huge fan of sudafed (but the real stuff that's kept behind the counter now in some states). Got me through college in a very cold place.

  23. I always find that mashing on the bone under my eyes helps unclog the most stubborn stuff. I also am a lover of sudafed.
Sucks ASS that you have been feeling so crummy for so long. ugh
    xo
