HSG? Erm.

I was all cool as a cucumber about today until last night when I was googling stuff about getting my HSG and landed on Stirrup Queens and read this:

Maybe I’m going to sound like a big wuss, but the HSG was the most pain I’ve ever experienced. It’s my 10 when they ask you how the pain is on a scale of 1 to 10. Giving birth to twins vaginally did not even come close to being as painful as the HSG.

Now I am eying the one hydr0codone pill I have left over from when I had a bad bike accident and wondering if I should take it before I go in.

  1. Take that pill. I had painkillers on board before mine, but they didn't touch the sides. That fucker hurts.

  2. Haven't done it, but I hear taking pain medication in advance is a good idea...

  3. I didn't think it was that bad. Some ibuprofen was okay for me. As long as the radiologist knows what he or she is doing, it should be fine. Unfortunately, I initially had one who looked like he just started shaving. He couldn't get the catheter past my cervix. After many painful attempts he let the tech call in an older dr. With the experienced dr it was quick and easy. I don't think pain meds would have helped for the pain of the first guy twisting and pinching me with the speculum. Afterwards, I was crampy for about 24 hours. Very manageable.

  4. I think a lot depends on how blocked your tubes are (or aren't). I took some ibuprofen about an hour before my appointment, & wore a pantiliner. It was uncomfortable, & there was an "ouch!" moment when he put the clamp on my cervix (!), a bit of cramping & spotting for awhile afterwards -- but it was definitely manageable. Take a pill before you go in, & have more on hand afterwards, just in case, but don't worry about it too much.

  5. I think I took 600mg of Ibuprofen about 30 minutes beforehand and I was just fine. I didn't think it was bad at all! Hope your experience is the same...

  6. I, too, just took 600 mg of ibuprofen about 45 minutes before the procedure and found the pain tolerable. There was some intense cramping for about 10-15 seconds, and then it was gone.

I think women's responses vary, but more often than not, I've heard that the cramping is tolerable.

  7. I have had two. The first one (not gonna lie) hurt like a sonofabitch. I had a male ob/gyn who used a cervical clamp.
My last was NOTHING compared to the first. My (female!) RE said using the clamp thing is not necessary and makes it much more painful. I still felt the dye going through, but it wasn't bad at all.
Take the pill just in case. Can't hurt.
Good luck! Even if you have the clamper, the pain doesn't last long.

  8. It didn't hurt. A small pinch when they put the catheter in. No big deal. I didn't really have cramping afterward either!

  9. Dude, take the pain meds!!! The HSG I had while awake was so painful and I have a high pain tolerance.

I almost broke the nurse's hand, I held it so tight!

  10. My HSG hurt some, but it wasn't 1/2 as bad as my endometrial biopsy, catheter (urethra), or phenergan burning up my vein. I'd take the drugs if you have a driver, but if you don't ibuprofen should work fine!

I'm crossing my fingers for perfect & clear tubes & uterus!

  11. I took a giant ibuprofen & i wouldn't say it was fun, but it was manageable. My iui was much much worse. A 'twisty' cervix was not seen in hsg or the hss... Go figure.
Hope you get through easily- i know you will because you are awesome & forward motion is a great motivater!
